Wyoming Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Wyoming? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Wyoming highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Wyoming requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 60′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross

Permits

Wyoming oversize permits are valid for one day or one trip. Permits are issued from ports of entry, but the driver must call ahead at least one hour prior to arrival to obtain a clearance number. Failure to do so will result in a fine up to $500 and a 24-hour shutdown. For more information, visit the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including weekend.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel on Interstate highways only for loads not exceeding 90′ long and 10′ wide. Proper lighting required.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) if load requires escort.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 110′ long requires one front and one rear.
  • Width: Over 14′ wide requires one front and one rear.
  • Height: Over 15′, depending on route, probably requires one front with height pole. Over 17′ more than likely requires one front with height pole.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • Overhang: Undefined.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles require an amber-colored rotating, flashing, or strobe light at least 4″ in diameter that must be horizontally mounted and have 360-degree visibility from at least 500′. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign at least 5′ long and 10″ tall with black letters no less than 8″ tall and 1” wide must be mounted on the bumper or roof of the vehicle and be visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle. Two red or orange safety flags at least 12″ in length and/or height must be mounted at a 40 to 70 degree angle on the top middle-section of the vehicle. All pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or 2-way communication device, one type A, B and C 5-lb fire extinguisher, three reflective emergency road triangles, and extra flags.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on both the front and rear. Flags must be placed on any projections extending beyond sides of trailer. A rear overhang exceeding 4′ must be flagged during the day and lighted at night. Night running requires an amber clearance light on each front corner, a red clearance light on each rear corner, and an amber revolving, flashing, or strobe light (or two-way flashing amber light at least 4″ in diameter) mounted on the vehicle and visible from both the front and rear.
