Vermont Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Vermont? Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 53′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 13’6″
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: Not exceeding one-third of the length of the item being shipped

Permits

Vermont oversize permits are valid for ten travel days. Must have permit prior to entering the state. For more information, visit the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, 7 days per week, except weekend travel prohibited for loads exceeding 100’ long, 10’6” wide, or 108,000 lbs gross. Movement may be restricted on Friday afternoons between July 1st and Labor Day.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel allowed for overweight only loads capable of traveling with the traffic flow.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day,
    Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day) if holiday lands on a Saturday or Sunday. Travel also prohibited on the Friday prior to the holiday and the Monday following the holiday.Travel prohibited on Routes 95 and 93 in the Boston area from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Holiday travel permitted on state roads (except from July 1 through Labor Day) for loads less than 100′ in length, 10′6″ in width, or 108,000 lbs in gross weight.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 80′ long requires one.
  • Width: Over 12′ wide requires one.
  • Height: Typically not required but over 14′ high is restricted.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • OverhangOver 15′ requires one.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles must have a manufacturer’s gross weight rating less than 20,000 lbs. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign at least 6′ long and 12″ high with black letters at least 5″ tall and 1″ wide must be either bumper- or roof-mounted and visible from both the front and the rear of the vehicle. Red or orange safety flags at least 12″ in length and/or height must be mounted at a 40- to 70-degree angle on all four corners of the vehicle. Headlights must be turned on when in operation on the job. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or two-way communication device, eight ignitable road flares, and a first-aid kit.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on the front and rear of the load. Flags at least 18″ by 18″ must be mounted on the corners and extremities of over-width and over-length loads. For over-length loads or loads with a rear overhang exceeding 4′, one flag shall be displayed at the end of the overhang if it is less than 2′ wide and two flags at the end of the overhang if it exceeds 2′ wide. Loads exceeding 80′ in overall length or 12′ in width require an amber flashing light on the towing vehicle. Overweight only loads do not require signs.
