Utah Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Utah? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Utah highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Utah requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 53′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 3′ in the front; 6′ off the rear

Permits

Utah oversize permits are valid for five days. Must have permit prior to entering the state. Permits may also be purchased at state line ports of entry or at interior ports if driver calls ahead for permission. For more information, visit the Utah Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturday and Sunday.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel allowed for loads of legal height not exceeding 92′ in overall length, 10′ in width, and a 10′ overhang, provided they have proper lights.
  • Travel prohibited for legal height loads exceeding 105′ in overall length and 10′ in width in Box Elder (all highways south of exit 357 on I-15), Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah (Milepost 16 north of the I-15 and SR-75 interchange, exit 265, and SR-68) counties on Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Pioneer Day [July 24th]).

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 110′ long requires one front and one rear.
  • Width: Over 14′ wide requires one front and one rear.
  • Height: Contingent upon route. Over 15′ high probably requires one front with height pole escort, but not positively. Over 17′ high more than likely requires one front with height pole.
  • Weight: Check with port of entry.
  • Overhang: Undefined.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles must weight no more than 12,000 lbs and have a wheelbase of at least 96″. The driver must have certified training and carry a minimum of $75,000 in liability insurance to operate in the state of Utah. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign at least 5′ wide and 10″ tall with black letters at least 8″ tall and 1″ thick must be mounted on top of the vehicle. Two light-bar-mounted rotating or strobe amber lights (AAMVA certified) at least 6″ tall and rated at 1,000 candle power must be mounted on each side of the sign and have 360-degree visibility from at least 500′. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or 2-way communication device (and be in constant contact with the truck driver of the shipment at ALL times), a hand-held”STOP”/”SLOW” paddle sign at least 24″, an extra “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign that is at least 7′ x 18″, eight igniting and burning road flares, eight reflective road triangles, three orange traffic cones at least 18″ tall, a hard hat, a reflective safety vest or jacket, a large flashlight that runs on DC batteries, additional batteries, a non-conductive height pole, a jack, a spare time, a lug wrench, a first aid kit, and a fire extinguisher with an electrical rating.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on the front and rear of all loads exceeding 10′ in width or 14′ in height and on the rear of any load exceeding 92′ in length. An overhang of 20′ or more must have a rotating, flashing, or oscillating amber light mounted at the end of the overhang at least 4′ above ground level. Flags are required to mark all extremities on any load overhanging the sides, front overhangs exceeding 3′, rear overhangs exceeding 4′, loads exceeding 10′ in width, and on the trailer corners of over-height only loads.
