Oklahoma Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Oklahoma? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Oklahoma highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Oklahoma requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 53′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 13’6″
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross

Permits

Oklahoma oversize permits are valid for three days. Permits are required prior to entering the state. For more information, visit the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturday and Sunday.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving & day after, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day).
  • Overweight only allowed continuous travel but must be requested when ordering permit.
  • Oversize loads (excluding overweight only) not allowed on the Interstate highways through Cleveland, Oklahoma, and Tulsa counties from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • The length is over 80′. (One front required.)
  • The length is over 100′. (One front and one rear required.)
  • The width is over 12′. (On two-lane highways, one front required. On multi-lane highways, one front and one rear required.)
  • The width is over 14’2″. (On two-lane highways, one front and one rear required.)
  • The width is between 12′ and 16′. (On multi-lane highways, one rear required.)
  • The width is over 16′. (On all highways and roads, one front and one rear required.)
  • The height is 15’9″ or more. (One front and one rear required. All public utilities and railroads along route must be contacted in advance.)

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot car and escort vehicles must either be a pickup truck not less than a quarter-ton rated load capacity or an automobile not less than 2000 lb. They must be licensed in Oklahoma or any other state if providing interstate escort services. “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs must be a minimum of 5′ long and 1′ tall. They must have a yellow background with black print-quality letters at least 10″ tall and 1.5″ thick. Signs must be mounted in a location appropriate to the load and location of the escort. An additional display with the name and city of the escort company or the owner of the vehicle is required on each side of the vehicle. A rotating or flashing amber beacon or light bar, at least 10” in diameter and 8” tall, must be mounted on top of the vehicle have visibility of at least 500’. Red flags (12″x12″) angled upward at 45 degree angle must be attached to the cab and rear corners of the vehicle. All pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with 2-way radio capabilities transmitting at least a half-mile, one height pole, four 15-minutes flares, two red hand-held flags or four reflective triangles; a standard 18” “STOP”/”SLOW” paddle sign; one orange hard hat, one fluorescent orange vest, one flashlight with two D-cell batteries, one full-size spare tire with jack and lug wrench, and one 10 lb. BC fire extinguisher or one 2-5 lb. chemical fire extinguisher.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on the front of tractor and the rear of load or trailer (whichever extends the farthest). Flags are required at the widest point of any oversize load, and a rear overhang of 4″ or more must be flagged.
