Nevada Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Nevada? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Nevada highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Nevada requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 75′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 10′ (provided overall length does not exceed 75′)

Permits

Nevada oversize permits are valid for five days. Must have permit prior to entering the state. For more information, visit the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
  • Weekend travel (except in restricted areas listed below) allowed for loads not exceeding 110′ long, 14′ wide, or 15′ tall.
  • Weekend travel not allowed on I-80 between Reno and California state line or on I-15 between Las Vegas (Exit 33) and California state line for loads over 12′ wide.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel allowed for loads not exceeding 110′ long, 12 wide, or 15′ tall.
  • Holiday travel permitted for loads not exceeding 110′ long, 12′ wide, or 15′ tall.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 105′ long requires one on both two- and four-lane roads.
  • Width: On two-lane roads, width between 12′ and 14′ requires one, between 14′ and 16′ requires two, between 16′ and 17′ requires three, and over 17′ may require two plus Highway Patrol. On four-lane roads, width between 14′ and 16′ requires one, between 16′ and 17′ requires two, and over 17′ may require two plus Highway Patrol.
  • Height: Over 16’6″ tall requires one with height pole.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • Overhang: Over 25′ in rear requires one.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

All pilot cars and escort vehicles must have no more than two axles, be at least 60″ in width with a wheelbase of a at least 95″, have a manufacturer’s gross weight of no more than 16,000 lbs, and be certified by the state of Nevada. Each vehicle should be equipped with proper signs that specify either “OVERSIZE”, “OVERSIZE LOAD”, “WIDE LOAD”, or “LONG LOAD.” Signs must have black letters at least 10″ tall and 1.625″ thick on a yellow background. Amber flashing (lens must me 5″ in diameter with a flash count of at least 50 per minute) or strobe lights with a minimum 50 candle power must be mounted to the roof above the sign and must have 360-degree visibility from at least 500′ in daylight. A placard with the company’s name and phone number must be placed on each side of the vehicle and visible from at least 50′. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a two-way radio that is in constant contact with all parties involved in the shipment, three 18″ bi-directional road triangles, one STOP/SLOW sign with a 5′ pole handle, one hard hat, one reflective safety vest, a copy of the ANSI/ISEA manual, and 5-lb (minimum) fire extinguisher. Drivers must be at least 18 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and be capable of carrying out flagging responsibilities.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDE LOAD” signs are required on the front and rear of the shipment. Signs must have a yellow background and be at least 7′ in width and 18″ in height with black lettering at least 10″ tall and 1.625″ thick. An amber flashing or strobe light with 360-degree visibility from at least 500′ must be affixed to the top of the cab. Daylight travel requires florescent orange warning flags at least 18″ long to be displayed at the outermost corners of the shipment as well as on any protrusions. Night travel requires two amber lights at the very most front extreme of the shipment, two amber lights on the outer (side) center of the shipment, and two red lights on the outermost rear of the shipment.
