Kansas Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Kansas? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Kansas highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Kansas requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 59’6″
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14″
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 59’6″ combined length

Permits

Kansas oversize permits are valid for seven days. Obtain permit prior to entering state. However, permits may be obtained at ports of entry with proof of insurance.. For more information, visit the Kansas Truck Routing and Intelligent Permitting System (K-TRIPS).

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, seven days a week and holidays.
  • Overweight only allowed to move at night.
  • Vehicles more than 14″ in width are restricted from traveling on the turnpike Monday through Thursday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • The length exceeds 90′. (One rear required.)
  • The width exceeds 14′. (One front and one rear required. On highways with four-lanes or less, the rear escort may be replaced with amber lights on the cab and rear of load. The light must be at least 2′ above the pavement and no more than 8’ above the pavement.)
  • The height exceeds 17′. (A high pole escort is required.)

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars must be passenger vehicles or pick-up trucks with a minimum width of 60″, a maximum weight-rating of one ton, and must not exceed 12,000 lbs in maximum load. They must be fully insured in their registered state. Pilot car and escort vehicle operators must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver’s license. All pilot cars must have an “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign, either on top of the vehicle or facing towards the front (front escort) or the rear (rear escort) of the vehicle. Oversize load signs must be a minimum of 5′ long and no less than 18″ tall. Letters must be black, a minimum of 8″ tall, and placed on a yellow background. Amber lights that rotate or strobe must be attached to the vehicle’s roof and have visibility of at least 1,000′. Required equipment includes: one standard 18- or 24-inch “STOP” and “SLOW” paddle sign, eight reflective triangles, eight red road safety flares, three orange 18-inch safety cones, one orange hard hat to be worn by driver when outside of the vehicle, one safety-colored orange vest or jacket, two 6-inch or larger amber flashing lights or one rotating/oscillating amber light, two red or orange 12-inch or larger square hand-held flags, one spare tire, one jack and lug wrench, one 5-pound B and C fire extinguisher, and a first aid kit.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

Permit requires that the front of the cab and rear of the trailer must have “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs that are a minimum of 7′ wide and 18″ tall, with a yellow background and black letters at least 10″ tall. Red or orange safety flags must be attached to each corner of the load at its widest parts, including the rear of all over-length loads, which must be flagged and marked with warning lights on the rear if an overhang exists. The cab must also have a top-mounted rotating or flashing amber light that is visible from at least 1,000 feet.
