Indiana Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Indiana? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Indiana highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Indiana requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 60′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 13’6″
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 3′ in the front; unlimited off the rear

Permits

Indiana oversize permits are valid for fifteen days. Permits are required prior to entering the state. For more information, visit the Indiana Department of Revenue.

Legal Operating Times

  • Continuous 24/7 travel permitted for loads up to 110′ long, 10′ wide, 13’6″ tall, and less than 200,000 lbs.
  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, seven days per week, for loads over 110′ long, 10′ to 14’4″ wide, and up to 15′ tall.
  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, Monday through Friday, for vehicles between 14′-4″ and 16′ wide.
  • 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, for loads over 16′ wide, 15′ high, or 200,000 lbs (other provisions may apply).
  • Overweight only allowed 24/7 continuous travel.
  • No travel on major holidays and holiday weekends.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • The length is over 85′. (On two-lane highways, one front required. Over four-lane highways, one rear required.)
  • The width is over 12’4″. (On two-lane highways, one front required. Over four-lane highways, one rear required.)
  • The height is 14’6″ or more. (On two-lane highways, one front required. Over four-lane highways, one rear required.)

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles are required to have a minimum of four wheels with a gross weight of less than 11,000 lbs. A flashing amber light must be mounted on top the escort vehicle, and an “OVERSIZE LOAD” must be displayed so that it is visible to approaching traffic. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must remain within 500′ of the load and be in radio communication.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs and 18″ square flags, one at each corner and one on each side at load’s widest point, are required on oversize travel. Low-beam headlights required for all oversize loads.
