Idaho Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Idaho? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Idaho highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Idaho requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 75′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 4’ in the front; no more than 10’ in the rear

Permits

Idaho oversize permits are valid for five days. For more information, visit the Idaho Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset, including Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel allowed for loads not more than 110′ long, 10′ wide, or 14′6″ tall (with lighting as specified on permit).
  • In Boise, Caldwell, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho Falls, Lewiston, Nampa, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Garden City, and Chubbuck, no travel from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. for loads over 13′ wide.
  • Holiday travel may be restricted depending on dimension of load.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 100’ requires one on two-lane roads. Over 115’ requires one on Interstate highways.
  • Width: Over 12’1” requires one on two-lane roads. Over 15’1”, requires one on four-lane roads.
  • Height: Over 16’ requires one.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • Overhang: Undefined.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be passenger cars, light trucks, or authorized vehicles not exceeding 16,000 lbs. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign at least 5’ wide and 12” tall with black letters at least 8” high with a 1” stroke must be displayed. Flashing or rotating amber lights or beacons must be mounted at each end of the sign above the roof and be visible from a minimum of 500’. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a two-way radio, an 18” STOP/SLOW paddle sign, three bi-directional emergency reflective triangles, a reflective orange vest, shirt, or jacket, two additional “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs, a non-metallic height pole, and a 5-lb type B and C fire extinguisher.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on all over-width loads. Flags are required on all four corners and extremities of over-width loads and on a rear overhang exceeding 4′. Overweight only loads do not require signs or flags.
