Delaware Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Delaware? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Delaware highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Delaware requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 60′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 13’6″
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 3’ in the front; 6’ off the rear.

Delaware oversize permits are valid for five days. For more information, visit the Delaware Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • Sunrise to sunset, including Saturday and Sunday.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Day, Presidents’ Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Election Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day). Travel restricted from 12:00 p.m. the day before a holiday to 9:00 a.m. the day after the holiday.

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 90′ long requires one rear. Over 100′ requires two. Over 120’ requires two and State Police.
  • Width: Over 13′ wide requires one. Over 14′ requires two. Over 15′ requires two escorts and State Police.
  • Height: Over 15′ tall requires two escorts. Over 17′-6″ requires two and State Police. All loads over 15′ tall require route survey.
  • WeightOver 120,000 lbs requires two and State Police plus a bridge survey.
  • OverhangOver 15′ requires one unless permit specifies otherwise.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicle must be no smaller than a compact car. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign at least 5’ long by 12” tall with black letters at least 8” tall must be displayed on either the roof or front & rear of the vehicle. Flashing or strobe lights are not required but may be mounted on roof. Red or orange fluorescent, 18” square, must be displayed. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a two-way radio.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on all loads exceeding legal width, length, or rear overhang. Flags are required at the extremities of all over-width loads. Loads with a rear overhang exceeding 4′ require one flag at the extreme rear of the load if the overhang is less than 2′ wide or two flags if the overhang exceeds 2′ wide.
