Connecticut Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Connecticut?   • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross

Permits

Connecticut oversize permits are valid for three days. For more information, visit the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour after sunrise to one-half hour before sunset, Monday through Friday.
  • Loads exceeding 13′-6″ wide or 14′ high only allowed travel from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day).

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 80’ long requires one rear on undivided highways. Over 100’ requires one front and one rear on undivided highways or one rear on divided highways. Over 120′ requires one front and one rear on divided highways.
  • Width: Over 12’ wide requires one rear (or one front and one rear on undivided highway). Over 13’6” requires on front and one rear. Over 15’ requires one front and two rear.
  • Height: Over 14’ high requires one front with height pole.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • Overhang: Undefined.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles must have a width of at least 60″ and 1.5 ton cargo capacity. Yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD AHEAD” or “OVERSIZE LOAD FOLLOWING”, “WIDE LOAD AHEAD” or “WIDE LOAD FOLLOWING”, or “LONG LOAD AHEAD” or “LONG LOAD FOLLOWING” (depending on whether leading or chasing) signs with black letters at least 8″ tall must be mounted on the vehicle at least 48″ above the ground. Amber flashing or rotating lights must be mounted atop the vehicle and be visible from at least 1,000′. Flags at least 18″ by 18″ must be mounted on both the front or rear corners of the vehicle. The driver must have a red vest or jacket, a red handheld flag at least 18″ by 18″, and be in constant communication with load via two-way radio.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on loads exceeding 10′ in width or 13′6″ in height. Flags are required on all corners of oversize or overweight loads and on widest points of wide loads. An overhang exceeding 4′ must be flagged during the day and lighted at night.
