Arizona Oversize Permits & Escorts Information

Do you need oversize load permits in the state of Arizona? Find out the maximum width and weight allowed on Arizona highways, the legal operating times, the oversize load signage rules, and when Arizona requires pilot cars. Oversize Load Limits

Maximum load sizes before a permit is required:

  • Length: 65′
  • Width: 8’6″
  • Height: 14′ on Interstate highways and 13’ on secondary roads
  • Weight: 80,000 lbs gross
  • Overhang: 3′ in the front; 6′ off the rear

Permits

Arizona oversize permits are valid for four days. Permits may abe purchased at most ports of entry. For more information, visit the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Legal Operating Times

  • One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset.
  • Continuous 24/7 travel allowed for loads not exceeding 10′ wide, 14′6″ high, or a 10′ rear overhang.
  • Loads not exceeding 120′ in length, 16′ in width, 16′ in height, and 250,000 lbs may travel on Interstate and specified state routes at night, from 3:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on weekends (must be requested when permit is ordered and must be stated on the permit). Note: loads over 11′ wide require one escort and loads over 15′ high require one escort with height pole to travel during weekend hours.
  • Travel prohibited for over-dimensional or overweight loads within city limits of greater Phoenix area on I-17, I-10, and SR-60 or within city limits of greater Tucson on I-10 or I-19 between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. and from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Local route approval required for over-dimensional travel within Phoenix and Tucson.
  • No travel on major holidays (New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day).

Pilot Cars & Escort Vehicles

Escort vehicle or pilot car required for heavy-haul or oversize loads if:

  • Length: Over 120’ long requires one front and one rear on two-land roads or one front on Interstate highways.
  • Width: Over 14’ wide requires one front and one rear on two-lane roads. Over 15’ wide requires one front on Interstate highways.
  • Height: Over 17′ high requires one front with height pole.
  • Weight: Undefined.
  • Overhang: Undefined.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot cars and escort vehicles must have a manufacturer’s gross weight rating of less than 20,000 lbs. A yellow “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign must be bumper- or roof-mounted and visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle. The sign must be at least 6′ long and 12″ tall with black letters at least 5″ tall and 1″ wide. Four red or orange safety flags at least 12″ in length must be mounted at a 40- to 70-degree angle on all four corners of the vehicle. Pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or 2-way communication device, eight ignitable road flares, and a first-aid kit.

Oversize Load Sign Requirements

“OVERSIZE LOAD” signs are required on all over-width vehicles or on loads exceeding 9′ in width. All over-width loads must be flagged on all extremities with 12″x12″ (or larger) red flags. Any front or rear overhang must be flagged or lighted. There are no sign or flag requirements for over-height only or overweight only loads.
